Hyperopia versus Presbyopia
What is the difference between Hyperopia and Presbyopia?
Do you have trouble seeing up close? doing near vision work? you may have hyperopia (farsightedness). However, it could also be presbyopia (adult onset farsightedness with failure to see close objects). The truth of the matter is the vision is similar but the causes are very different. Because of this, they have different treatment options.
Hyperopia (farsightedness) occurs when the light that enters the eye can not focus on the retina, because the eye is to short, the light actually would focus behind the eye. This occurs when the distance between the front and back of the eye is too short. Hyperopia (farsightedness) can affect people at any age. Young children will often out grow hyperopia as they become older. But if they do not, hyperopia can be treated with corrective lenses, either glasses or contact lenses. Laser surgery, such as LASIK, is also an option.
Presbyopia (adult onset farsightedness with failure to see close objects), on the other hand, also causes one to have difficulty reading close up, but it is age-related, and affects people over 40. It is caused by the crystalline lens, inside the eye, actually hardening with age. The visual result is similar to that of hyperopia; poor vision at near. Generally, this is treated with corrective lenses. Reading glasses, worn only when viewing things close up, are the most common treatment. Another option is to use contact lenses for monovision, when one eye is corrected for distance vision and the other corrected for near vision. Monovision users have to train themselves to see through this new optical system. Very similar to bifocal or progressive eyeglasses, multifocal contact lenses can correct presbyopia. Surgically, we can perform Conductive Keratoplasty or Hyperopic Presbyopic iLASIK or LASIK.
Hyperopia only effects a smaller portion of the population and there are surgical options to correct it. Presbyopia is a condition that will eventually get everybody, it was not until recently that surgery became a corrective option. When the lens inside the eye loses its ability to flex and adjust focus, seeing up close is extremely difficult, that is when it is time for treatment. Though a couple surgical options are available for presbyopia, nothing beats the safe and affordable option of reading glasses. They are safe and do not require anesthesia of lasers near the eye, plus they can be very stylish too. Once a person has accepted that they need reading glasses, they may as well get a pair that will be fashionable too. For those who do not look forward to using eyeglasses, then LASIK or iLASIK are safe options for those who are qualified.
